Greetings, fellow road warriors! With roughly 1850 kilometers standing between us and the comforts of home, we find ourselves on the brink of the final stages of our Balkan odyssey. The road back home is long, but it’s right in front of us. The Balkans, a realm of captivating landscapes and unforgettable moments, may seem like a distant memory now. As the sun graces the sky over Draguignan, a mix of excitement and a hint of wistfulness fills the air. The road ahead holds the promise of a thrilling conclusion, and we’re ready to embrace every mile.
The morning in Draguignan dawns with a sense of purpose. The road is calling, and we gear up for the ride that lies ahead. Our strategy for these last miles is clear: two stages, two long riding days, and an abundance of hours spent in the saddle. Our calendar will be filled with the hum of engines and the ever-changing landscapes outside our visors. While our pace quickens, our tourist ventures will take a backseat. The allure of the road takes precedence, and the anticipation of the journey’s finale fuels our spirits.
Day 16: The Spanish Coast Becomes the Road Back
As we set our course for the day, memories of the Balkans linger like faded photographs, and the allure of new horizons tugs at our hearts. Yesterday’s decision to ride for Spain shapes our route, weaving a path that promises diversity and adventure. While the shorter route through Carcassonne, Toulouse, and Biarritz offers its charm, our preference for the Spanish coast prevails. And so, our day unfolds from Draguignan to Narbonne, as we traverse the Narbonne Natural Park. The road winds its way to Barcelona, a city alive with energy and history, before leading us to the tranquil embrace of Castellón de la Plana, nestled between Tarragona and Valencia.
860 kilometers unfurl before us, and as we cut through the Spanish landscape, the constant high temperatures become our companions. The relentless heat seems to have inspired my Forma Adventure boots to shed their soles, the departure of one sole paving the way for the other to follow suit. A quirky souvenir from the road, the question hangs in the air like an unsolved riddle: Will I arrive home with boots? With no shoemaker to fix them in sight, I thought about getting new ones, but they served me so well for a long time that I plan to get them back in shape.
Day 17: The Grand Finale
The final stretch awaits an ambitious 1000-kilometer dash that promises to etch its mark on our memory. High temperatures persist, but determination trumps discomfort as we embark on the last leg of this incredible journey. The route mirrors our journey’s inception, a nostalgic twist that adds a layer of symmetry to our adventure. Departing from the charming haven of Castellón de la Plana, we navigate toward Ciudad Real, deliberately avoiding the bustling traffic of Madrid. The road leads us homeward, crossing the border of our homeland. It’s always a memorable moment. However, it’s time to reinforce the attention to our riding and what surrounds us. Battling hot temperatures, tiredness, soreness, and long distance, demands more motorcycle riding awareness. At moments like these, we can’t let our guard down.
As night falls, our destination awaits – home, sweet home. Arriving under the cover of darkness, our bodies weary but our spirits soaring, a sense of accomplishment washes over us. The exhilaration of the ride, the challenges overcome, and the camaraderie forged on the road come together in a symphony of satisfaction. Undertaking this motorcycle tour as a couple, was truly magnificent. The Balkans’ adventure, from its inception to its conclusion, has left an indelible mark on our souls.
Wrapping it Up
As I pen these final thoughts, I’m reminded of the countless moments that have shaped this journey. The breathtaking vistas, the unexpected encounters, and the bonds formed with fellow travelers are all woven into the fabric of our memories. From Albania’s wonderful discovery to the Montenegro landscapes, from the Bosnia and Herzegovina history embrace, to the Croatian coast, from soaring mountain passes to bustling city streets, every mile has been a testament to the spirit of exploration that fuels our passion.
As we bid farewell to the Balkans, I’m left with a sense of gratitude for the road that has led us here. The adventure may be over, but the stories will continue to unfold, shared with fellow enthusiasts and kindred spirits. Until the next chapter of this ever-evolving adventure that is motorcycle travel unfolds, keep the rubber side down, and may your own adventures be as exhilarating and unforgettable as this Balkan ride.
Stay tuned for more two-wheeled tales and the road that beckons beyond.
