Grab your helmet and let’s hit the road for an unforgettable journey through the beauty of Ireland’s coast, and the hidden gems that are stashed away inland.

London Derry and the Memorial of Emotions

After Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coastal Route in the previous stage, it was now time to take the tour to other places. As I continued my two-wheeled adventure through Ireland, my journey brought me to London Derry. This historic city held a significant memorial that touched me deeply. I took the time to explore and learn about its history, particularly the infamous Bloody Sunday incident. My emotions ran high as I stood in the presence of the memorial, a powerful reminder of the struggles and resilience of the people. London Derry left an indelible mark on my heart.

The Allure of the Wild Atlantic Way

Leaving London Derry behind, I eagerly set my course toward the renowned Wild Atlantic Way. This iconic route has become a favorite among motorcycle riders, and it’s not hard to see why. Stretching along the rugged and picturesque western coastline of Ireland, it offers a breathtaking blend of awe-inspiring landscapes, coastal vistas, and winding roads that beckon riders to embrace the thrill of the journey. The sheer beauty and diversity of the landscapes make it a true paradise for motorcycle touring enthusiasts.

Detours and Personal Choices

Now… I like to keep my options open, even when it comes to riding some of the best biking roads. Come to think of it, that openness to finding new routes is what motorcycle adventure touring is all about. And encountering road works on the Wild Atlantic route was the excuse to get away from something that was beginning to feel monotonous. You see, the hard part of creating motorcycle tours or GPS tracks to follow, and also its magic, is making sure that it doesn’t get monotonous. Sure you’ve got to consider road conditions, speed, who and what the tours are intended for, stops along the way, daylight hours, riding hours…. and a whole bunch of things. However, managing the balance between all of them is crucial for the continuous wow factor. It’s all about compromises. If what you go for puts a goofy smile on your face, there is no looking back. That being said… it was the perfect excuse to make my detours into the Irish interior. And boy did that pay off.

Exploring Ireland’s Hidden Gems

As I embarked on the Wild Atlantic Way, I couldn’t resist the temptation to venture into the lesser-explored interior regions of Ireland. And let me tell you, it was a decision that paid off in spades. The narrow roads and ever-changing tarmac conditions kept me on my toes, but the rewards were unparalleled. The captivating vistas of lush green hills, tranquil lakes, and untouched natural reserves unfolded before me, leaving me in awe of Ireland’s natural beauty. The country had instantly skyrocketed on my motorcycle riding appeal chart.

A Serendipitous Encounter at Pat’s Aire

With lodging plans up in the air, I stumbled upon Pat’s Aire—a camping ground owned by the one and only Pat himself. Initially uncertain if I could camp there amidst the caravans, fate intervened, and I found myself in the midst of extraordinary hospitality. In the blink of an eye, I was handed a glass of local liquor in one hand and a steaming cup of coffee in the other. The warmth and kindness of the people around me were simply unparalleled. The camping lady generously offered me a spot near a cozy greenhouse, and the friendly English couple with their mobile caravan extended their coffee hospitality. Overwhelmed by their welcoming nature, I felt compelled to reciprocate their kindness by sharing a taste of my homeland—a couple of cans of Portuguese cod and chickpeas. We bonded over our shared love for travel, and exchanged stories of our adventures, including their epic journey to the North Cape and my own two-wheeled escapades. The next day, as I bid farewell, I left a heartfelt message in the guest book and presented Pat with a 2wheelsonroad T-shirt, leaving a mark as the first biker to stay there in a long time.

A Journey of Unforgettable Encounters

My time on Ireland’s Atlantic coast had been a whirlwind of emotions, breathtaking landscapes, and unexpected encounters. From the solemnity of London Derry to the allure of the Wild Atlantic Way, and the serendipitous hospitality at Pat’s Aire, each chapter of this adventure was filled with laughter, warmth, and moments that touched my soul. As I continued my journey, I carried with me the memories of the remarkable people I met along the way and the beauty of Ireland’s hidden gems. The road still stretched ahead, promising more unforgettable moments and tales yet to be written.
