Welcome back! Today’s travel diary goes beyond motorcycle adventures. While motorcycle travel is our passion here at 2wheelsonroad, there are moments when it’s essential to pause and immerse ourselves in the present. Sometimes, circumstances align, offering us the gift of shared time, and it’s these moments that we cherish the most.
This time, the circumstances aligned perfectly. What could be better than exploring a city steeped in centuries of history, a city that has witnessed humanity’s struggles and triumphs from every possible angle? Even more special was the opportunity to explore this remarkable city with a loved one. Yes, my wife decided to join me on this break from our journey, and it turned out to be an unforgettable experience.

Local Insights: Navigating Istambul
Now, for a confession. Our exploration of Istanbul wasn’t guided by a travel book or a frantic attempt to see everything in a limited time. Instead, we were fortunate enough to have local insights before even setting foot in the city. How did we manage this stroke of luck? Stay tuned for the next chapter of our adventure, where we’ll introduce you to the people who helped us uncover the top spots in a city brimming with more attractions than we could possibly explore in the time we had.
I could attempt to describe Istanbul from my perspective. But here’s the thing… when I asked my wife what were her thoughts, the words she used painted such a clear picture that I feel it’s better to share them than to leave you with a motorcycle traveler’s limited insights:
Here’s what my wife Joana had to say:
“I found a fabulous monumental city with an incredible mystique. Sounds, smells, colors, and a light that immediately places us in the East. The magnitude of a city that connects two continents is felt in the daily hustle and bustle. The grandeur of the Bosphorus Strait and its cruises are ever-present, with cargo ships visible in the distance. The mythical Grand Bazaar, or Kapali Çarsi, extends far beyond the building where its name is displayed! It’s a world within the world that is Istanbul! It’s easy to get lost not only in the labyrinthine streets but also in everything you can find there.”
As I leafed through your friend’s notes, I realized how much more there was to explore. For centuries, Istanbul served as the capital of this vast and powerful empire, leaving an indelible mark on its culture, architecture, and identity. The remnants of the Ottoman era can be seen throughout the city. Istanbul’s streets are like an open-air museum, offering a glimpse into a bygone era of splendor and grandeur.
Here are some highlights:
Historical Istanbul
- Hagia Sophia: This architectural marvel has a history as varied as the city itself. Originally built as a cathedral in 537 AD, it was later converted into a mosque and now serves as a museum. The Hagia Sophia is a stunning example of Byzantine architecture and is renowned for its massive dome and intricate mosaics.
- Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque): This iconic mosque is known for its six minarets and stunning blue tiles that adorn its interior walls. It’s an architectural masterpiece and one of the most important landmarks in Istanbul.
- Topkapi Palace: Once the residence of Ottoman sultans, Topkapi Palace is now a museum that showcases the rich history of the Ottoman Empire. Visitors can explore its beautiful courtyards, intricate mosaics, and impressive collection of artifacts.
- Basilica Cistern: This underground water reservoir dates back to the 6th century and is one of the most fascinating attractions in Istanbul. Visitors can wander through its eerie chambers and marvel at the ancient architecture.
- Grand Bazaar: Kapali Çarsi: No visit to Istanbul would be complete without a trip to the Grand Bazaar. After all, it is the oldest and largest bazaar in the world, dating back to the 15th century. With its labyrinthine streets and thousands of shops (61 covered streets and over 4000 shops) selling everything from carpets to spices, it’s a shopper’s paradise and a fascinating glimpse into Istanbul’s rich history.
Modern Istanbul
- Taksim Square and Istiklal Street: This bustling area is the heart of modern Istanbul, with its lively atmosphere, trendy shops, and vibrant nightlife. Istiklal Street is a pedestrianized thoroughfare lined with shops, restaurants, and cafes, making it the perfect place to soak up the city’s contemporary vibe.
- Dolmabahçe Palace: This opulent palace served as the administrative center of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century. With its European-inspired architecture and lavish interiors, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the Ottoman sultans.
- Karakoy and Galata Districts: These trendy neighborhoods are home to some of Istanbul’s coolest cafes, bars, and art galleries. With their hipster vibe and historic charm, they offer a unique blend of old and new.
Our journey through Istanbul has been truly unforgettable. As we bid farewell to this magnificent city, we take with us cherished memories of its stunning architecture, vibrant atmosphere, and rich history. Istanbul has captured our hearts, and we can’t wait to return and explore more of its wonders.
However, the time has come to part ways. My wife is returning home, and as for me, it’s goodbye Istanbul, but only for now. There is still so much of Turkey left to discover, and I can’t wait to continue this adventure. Istanbul may have been just the appetizer, but I know that the main course will be just as incredible. Teşekkür ederim and goodbye for now.
